Review of all data for 20 million people in contaminated zones up to 1998 shows that for both acute (i.e. immediate post accident) and chronic irradiation there are "extremely adverse combinations of high infant and general mortality with low birth rate." If LLRC's understanding of non-standard English syntax is correct the increased mortality arises from "radiation" being recorded as the cause of death, and current figures for non-cancer illnesses, combined with unfavourable demographic factors, should be taken as the harbinger of a soon-to-be-realised increase in cancer similar to that already seen for thyroid cancer.
A disproportion of sex ratios beginning at birth and increasing throughout life threatens to deepen the demographic catastrophe already seen in a rapidly declining population. An uncharacteristically high but statistically significant proportion of boys is born but mortality in boys is uncharacteristically high and the excess continues to grow. It continues into manhood with "supermortality" of able-bodied men. "In connection with the early extinction of men in the senior age groups the [proportion] of women .. sharply grows." A 3.9 year reduction in life expectancy was seen in the eight years to 1998 - by when expectancy was 61.2 years for men, 72.7 for women.
"Rather substantial" increase in brain tumour frequency in children between two five year periods before and after Chernobyl.
Earlier work by same authors had shown that leukaemia and lymphoma SMRs in 8 years after Chernobyl in the "most contaminated" territories relative to an unspecified control were not substantially different from 1.0. No trend with dose was observable in the less contaminated territories. Present work involves aggregating data for blood diseases in cows and people relative to radiation and chemical industry plant. Again, no consistent dose/response trend.
Preliminary report on work to score possible chromosome aberrations in children with significant ophthalmic problems controlled against children without. No results yet.
Overview of declining health (citing WHO findings that 18.9% of men and 14.8% of women are healthy). Shows increasing morbidity and high rates of registered disability.
"The 10-years period after the Chernobyl accident is well-known as a latent." Stresses importance of further monitoring.
Two studies had been carried out in Rome and near Lake Como to investigate Caesium transfer from food to mothers' milk. No results here. In 1997 samples were collected from four areas. Caesium contamination of some tens of mBq per kg. No results for Strontium yet.
