Prevalence of non cancer diseases in children in the radiation controlled territories of Ukraine has increased 2.24-fold between 1988 and 1996. In the same period rates of "radiation induced" diseases have also increased:- neoplasms 7.7-fold and congenital malformation 2.96-fold. Invalidity indices have risen 16-fold, most dramatically in the last few years. Invalidity is mostly due to diseases of the nervous system and sense organs, pathology of the endocrine system and congenital anomalies.

Radiation doses received by population did not exceed the threshold values for acute radiation syndrome clinical manifestations. The public, scientists and medical workers do not have enough knowledge of radiation medicine to explain all the medical biases in radiation effects in Chernobyl plant personnel and the surviving population. This predisposes not only to increased psychological stress but also makes substantial additional impact on people's health. It therefore has a significant effect on the exploitation of nuclear power in Ukraine and leads to formation of opinions on the nuclear threat to public health that have an insufficient scientific basis.

Children born with deformities of the face and jaw, predominantly fissures of upper lip and palate, who were in any stage of gestation at the time of the accident. There was a 2 - 3 fold increase in the most contaminated zones. Citing knowledge that congenital fissure of upper lip and palate are formed at 10 - 12 weeks gestation authors state that only one third of the anomalies found could be attributed to irradiation. These cases are, however, anomalously severe.

Before Chernobyl incidence of malignant neoplasms in Gomel was among the lowest in Belarus but since the accident has overtaken its neighbours. Considerable increase in incidence and rates of solid tumours.
